Reddit Battles Meta and Google Using Ads Based on Topics – Not Your Data
- nabla9 2y agoReddit is in partnership with Google Expanding our Partnership with Google https://www.redditinc.com/blog/reddit-and-google-expand-partnership https://www.redditinc.com/blog/reddit-and-google-expand-part... >With this partnership, and via our Data API, we’re ushering in new ways for Reddit content to be displayed across Google products by providing programmatic access to new, constantly evolving, and dynamic public posts, comments, etc., on Reddit. This enhanced collaboration provides Google with an efficient and structured way to access the vast corpus of existing content on Reddit and enables Google to use the Reddit Data API to improve its products and services – including supporting new ways to display Reddit content and providing more efficient ways to train models.

After decades of privacy invading "personalized" ads, this shows that Reddit/Google are at least open to experimenting with a different, more privacy focused approach. Is this the beginning of the end for "personalized" ads? We can only hope but the ad networks may not deserve too much credit for taking a step toward "doing the right thing". With more than half the users on the web now using ad blocking, this may be a simple act of self preservation on their part.
