Tell HN: Vercel flags accounts using protonmail
I attempted to sign up for Vercel today using my protonmail account, and was flagged on the sign up page with a message that I would need to email registration@vercel.com to proceed. I emailed them asking to register, and they responded a day later saying I'd need to sign up with a different email provider. I'm not sure why they would go out of their way to flag proton?
- dave4420 2y agoMaybe they have deliverability issues with protonmail?
- nullfield 2y agoQuite unlikely. This doesn’t differentiate between paid and non-paid PM users, or those just hosting their domain email with PM, either, but if a company wants to cut off its face to spite some users for the communications provider they user, then yeah. Don’t use Vercel.
- Malidir 2y agoMore a case that proton and other providers will strip the analytic trackers from marketing emails?
- cpach 2y agoMy guess is that they do this to try to prevent abuse on the Vercel platform. Does it help? I don’t know, and Vercel will probably not share their internal stats, but it might be enough to deter some abusive but unsophisticated users.
- sabbaticaldev 2y agodon’t use vercel
- aosaigh 2y agodon't use protonmail
- manuelmoreale 2y agoWell I’ll split the difference and I’ll say don’t use either and you should be good to go.
- Malidir 2y ago1. Poor of Vercel to block Proton. 2. Ditch Vercel. 3. Always wise to buy your own domain and then add that to your mail provider, so you are not locked in.
- leerob 2y agoHey, I’m on the Vercel team. We don’t block Protonmail, however we do have different services used to help prevent abuse and malicious signups. They look at signals to determine whether the email needs a second review, which is why it’s suggesting to reach out to the provided email. Once you do that, we can get it approved and moving along. Sorry about the friction here – we’re continuing to tune the heuristics.
- mkbkn 2y agoOne insurance provider and a bank in my country blocks Protonmail. Both uses Trend Micro as their firewall. My bank was kind enough to whitelist my email. The insurance provider is still clueless.
