I used to do the same train commute weekly for some time. Yes, it's terrible. But from what I have heard there was a direct high-speed connection until a few years ago. Allegedly this was suppressed because they could not reach an agreement with the Belgian SNCB who demanded the high-speed train did some extra stops.
