Totally. MIT admissions now reflect the merit of being born into a family that had the resources to put you into high-quality schooling, sign you up for extracurriculars, and help you study for admissions tests and write the essays. That’s merit, baby!
- wryoak 2y agoAgreed, in full honesty, it is actual merit, because it is work applied to learning and succeeding. And I also agree with the underlying implications of your sarcasm: our system blows because it will never be able to sort us based on our inborn potential, only the results of the application of resources with which our parents were able to provide us. Although to continue with the honesty, sorting based on inborn potential sounds vaguely dystopian.
- giardini 2y agoOr you can be smart and learn to study (most MIT students). Or you can be very smart (met a few of these).
