Apple can't do cars. Meet the Chinese tech giants that can
- PaulHoule 2y agoIt might be that phones are so profitable that Apple can't afford to enter any business that isn't phones. If that 30% app store cut got knocked down to 3% or if iMessage was opened you might see a wave of innovation and growth out of Cupertino.
- talldayo 2y agoOr, cynically speaking, that we're more comfortable overpaying for phones than we are overpaying for cars. If your phone asks for a $10/month subscription to listen to music, we pay it. If your car asks you to subscribe to a service, you won't give it a dime unless it stops you from driving it. Then you have the ubiquity of third-party repair, a process Apple hates, dominating automotive industries. They can't design a proprietary fuel without getting sued, and they can't sell Applecare on it without losing money. Apple has zero showrooms for vehicles, their customers likely don't care, and their manufacturing strategy of relying on China makes the least-amount of sense for cars. Apple Car just doesn't make sense. It's a design doc Kanye West accidentally dropped on his way out of Cupertino and must have gotten mixed up with the serious plans by executives that didn't know any different.
