I've been advocating for railside cameras so that the driver can see things further down the track. The accidents happen at crossings of which there are relatively few. If you put a cam and a computer with a crosswalk it can rigorously figure out (and transmit) someone is crossing the road. Very much more so than a vehicle approaching from around the corner.
