The FTC Hates Your Data
- Terr_ 2y ago> The Internet was built off of a deal between companies and customers, one that we ought to understand. Companies provide a cornucopia of free, or almost-free, content and services, but in exchange we provide companies with data that helps them direct tailored advertisements to us. There's something about the subtext or tone here which raises my hackles: I get the feeling this is implied to be a morally-sacred "Deal" only when I'm annoyed at data-brokers cross-referencing all my purchases with all my pseudonymous social media posts... yet somehow it'll shift downwards into "merely an accidental status-quo" the moment a company decides it "needs" even more data or ends up distributing malware and scams.
