What an odd spin.
People don't rent comedies anymore because there are no comedies made anymore for you to rent.
And nobody's making comedies anymore because present day people are too easily offended by everything and raise hell on Twitter out of every joke.
- davkan 2y ago> And nobody's making comedies anymore because present day people are too easily offended by everything and raise hell on Twitter out of every stereotype joke. This is such a tired line. Comedies did not stop getting made because woke mobs were flaming them on Twitter, despite what Joe Rogan might have told you in his latest special plastered all over Netflix. There is a confluence of actual reasons why comedies aren’t prominent in theaters anymore. Studios stopped making mid budget movies. Studios consider international audiences more than ever before and comedy doesn’t transcend cultures easily. Comedies that performed poorly in theaters often broke even in vhs/dvd sales and rentals. Without that it’s more risky to make them. Movie goers don’t want to pay $30 for tickets and popcorn to see a comedy. Low budget comedies are saturated on streaming. High budget action/comedy movies are being made instead e.g. fall guy. And there’s certainly additional reasons more relevant than twitter users cancelling movies.
- walterbell 2y ago> comedy doesn’t transcend cultures easily Or foreign investment censorship priorities.
- davkan 2y agoThe censorship affects all movies with international audiences like marvel etc, not just comedies. I don’t think having to avoid saying Taiwan has caused a significant decrease in comedy productions.
- walterbell 2y ago> avoid saying Taiwan And more: https://pen.org/report/made-in-hollywood-censored-by-beijing/ https://pen.org/report/made-in-hollywood-censored-by-beijing...
- Rinzler89 2y ago>This is such a tired line. That doesn't mean it's not true. There's a reason people keep repeating it. >Studios stopped making mid budget movies. Have you checked Netflix? It's full of low budget slop. >Studios consider international audiences more than ever before and comedy doesn’t transcend cultures easily. I disagree. American and British comedies were incredibly popular with the youth in my Eastern European country. Same with humor from the GTA games and South Park. >High budget action/comedy movies are being made instead e.g. fall guy. Is Fall Guy supposed to be a comedy? I've watched it and I don't think I've laughed once. It didn't even make me push air out of my nose.
- davkan 2y ago> That doesn't mean it's not true. There's a reason people keep repeating it. Yeah, because millionaire comedians who can say whatever they want on their massive platforms didn’t like getting flamed on twitter and the younger generation doesn’t care for their edgy jokes. “You can’t make jokes like that anymore” is just an excuse made by comedians who can’t make a joke audiences want to hear. Studios want to make money, if there was money in it they’d make it, regardless of taste. > Have you checked Netflix? It's full of low budget slop. “mid budget movies” > I disagree. American and British comedies were incredibly popular with the youth in my Eastern European country. Same with humor from the GTA games and South Park. It’s not universal but it is more difficult to adequately dub a comedy than an action movie. Physical comedy like Mr. Bean doesn’t have that issue but comedies often perform poorly overseas for that reason. > Is Fall Guy supposed to be a comedy? Yes, it’s an action/comedy.
- Rinzler89 2y ago>It’s not universal but it is more difficult to adequately dub a comedy than an action movie. Physical comedy I was talking about undubbed.
- al_borland 2y agoI think there is still a market for the old offensive comedies. There are comics out there who simply don’t care about getting cancelled, and it seems their audiences are big enough where the people complaining don’t matter. The number of people willing to speak up to support the right for people to make and enjoy movies, or content in general, that is offensive seems to be growing. Spotify kept Rogan and dumped the employees complaining about him. Netflix backed Chappelle with his specials. Eminem’s latest album debuted at #1. South Park is still going strong. The people raising hell on Twitter were never the audience, so it really doesn’t matter what they think. They should be making things for the people who are going to pay. Disney has been trying to please all those people and there stock has tanked. All I hear are people complaining about their various franchises and how they suck now. I guess those people on Twitter aren’t showing up to support the content they demanded.
- Rinzler89 2y ago>I think there is still a market for the old offensive comedies There is but not from Hollywood. >There are comics out there who simply don’t care about getting cancelled Yeah but Disney and major studios won't touch them. >The people raising hell on Twitter were never the audience The doesn't mean Disney and the rest aren't pandering to online social activists. Just look at the new Snow White where they're pushing the girl boss trope who doesn't need a man, doesn't clean the Dwarves' home, and didn't use real live actors for the Dwarves because Peter Dinklage complained about it being offensive to people with dwarfism. Hollywood lives in a bubble. >Disney has been trying to please all those people and there stock has tanked And they'll keep doing it as long as they own the world's biggest IPs like Star Wars, Marvel, etc. Once people stop watching their slop altogether they'll stop as well.
- dangus 2y agoFirst off, let’s not forget that you’re criticizing a movie that isn’t even out yet. For all we know it could be a critically acclaimed box office smash hit when it comes out. Not that I hold my breath for these remakes, but the possibility exists. And it’s wildly disingenuous to be a film critic of a film that isn’t out yet. But anyway, this is funny to me. Snow White is a nearly 100 year old movie. It came out 22 years after Birth of a Nation. If you think a remake can work as a modern movie with zero changes that is kind of naive in itself isn’t it? It’s not like anyone is going to remake From Russia with Love and include the scenes where James Bond slaps women around. And I mean, yeah, technically, the original Snow White is probably pretty offensive to people with dwarfism. They’re all heavily dehumanized as lesser people with more flaws than Snow White. Snow White has to come in and fix their life essentially, cook and clean for them, etc. But anyway, I don’t think that’s the driving reason behind using animated dwarves, I think they couldn’t do some of the comedic elements as well with real actors as they can with exaggerated animation. There also aren’t a lot of people with dwarfism who are lead-quality actors. You need seven of them for that movie. My guess is that test footage wasn’t working.
