It's amazing/unsurprising/sad how much of society is inaccessible to you if you don't own a smartphone.
- stavros 2y agoIs this any different to if you didn't own a car, or a phone, fifty years ago?
- davisr 2y agoPayphones were ubiquitous 50 years ago and you could pay for a taxi in cash, instead of needing a bank account and identifying yourself like you must today.
- stavros 2y agoBy that logic, smartphones aren't required, as you can just use a laptop.
- davisr 2y agoI don't own a cell phone at all, and I do indeed just use a laptop (a Libreboot-ed X200). I have home phone service through a VoIP provider. Works great, actually. But it would really be more convenient if there were payphones to use and taxis aplenty.
- rubyfan 2y agoOn the flip side, it’s also amazing how much advances in the technology have made cellphone ownership accessible to the public.
