One issue could be that many of these startups are venture funded. So they don't need to quickly find a solution that works and then scale up. As a result they might spends too many resources on something that just doesn't bring a net benefit in the end. I understand that some of these technologies need large upfront funding but there needs to be a better vetting in place about their success probability.
