I think we have a fundamental misunderstanding of how to properly use plastics, from an ephemeral product packaging perspective: Single-Use individually wrapped items: Candy, straws, lids, ziplocks, veggie bags, doggie-poop-bags etc.
Anything that is designed to mostly keep a small individual item clean and dry in shipping and shelf prior to consumption, but is immediately waste once the product meets consumer - should be, equivocally, made from immediately reclaimable/bio-available, composable, means. Such as plant waste, starches, hemp, mycelium, paper, glass.
Also - one thing often overlooked is how much plastics are used in landscape, construction, agriculture that is literally planted in the dirt, used to smother plants, line houses etc that get pummeled into micro plastic detritus among all soil...
I was writing here on HN a fair bit about the thoughts on using Aergel Particles to filter out petro chems from soils, fluids:
Specifically looking at heavy chemicals and PFTE from plastics/teflon.
(also note that the teflon tape we use on all water/plumbing connections in our water infrastructure results in teflon being very close to water we consume.

It would be interesting to mix micro-beads of silica aerogels for heavy metal absorption. [0]
It would also be interesting if it would be a good inter-mix for fallow cycles soil amendment activities... With the addition to rockdust through the cycling of fields, one can instill nutrients, while removing any heavy metal buildup.
The research as to whether silica aeogels can remove all sorts of things is interesting -- would be great to see about Glyphosate Removal. In lieu of the HN post about re-invigorating for the Monarch Butterfly [1] [2] [3]
