Is Bill Gates a savior or a villain?

- ziggyzecat 2y agoI'm gonna exaggerate a little, and go a bit "genkidrama" his company has been writing leaky software on purpose for decades ... how is that even a question? he and many of the rich tech peeps of his generation are the uberscaled equivalent of people who adopt children so they get to abuse them without the children making a fuzz because they get something in return. all people who write leaky software are comparable. and their lawyers and so on as well. fuck this shit. these discussions are getting annoying. there is too much proof and hard evidence pointing towards even worse. but people are technical and they like what they do.
- fuzzfactor 2y agoI think Gates was a brilliant programmer and how he used it would naturally reflect on his priorities. On the one hand to all of those who have achieved prosperity beyond their wildest dreams, completely as a result of his & his ex-wife's philanthropic efforts, I would say he is like a savior. OTOH to everyone who has ever used a PC, more like a villain. If you compare the multitudes in each category, along with the relative financial involvement in either direction, this should give a fairly revealing picture of his priorities. That may be a good way to make an informed judgment.

- pestatije 2y agowell, just by making that question its upsetting...he is the 'evil' in that famous quote 'be no evil'...he has screwed so many billions(humans) is not funny
- skhunted 2y agoHis wife divorced him partly because of his association with Epstein. She had much better moral fortitude than Bill. Gates is and will always be a villain. When you do villainous things you are a villain. There is no redemption for him. https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2022/03/melinda-gates-jeffrey-epstein-led-to-bill-gates-divorce-gayle-king-interview https://www.vanityfair.com/style/2022/03/melinda-gates-jeffr...
- beardyw 2y agoHaving read the article, he is (wait for it) just like all humans, a mixture of good and bad. It would be most remarkable if he wasn't. So neither.
