This isn't specifically a problem of private industry. I've worked for the federal government, and I distinctly recall several times that they used my SSN to identify and authenticate me.
The government doesn't even follow its own instructions. Why is it surprising when others don't?
- kube-system 2y agoSure, but "identity theft" is mostly a problem when people take out a loan under someone else's name, not where someone shows up at your job and does some of your work for you :)
- throw10920 2y agoThis job involved dealing with protected information that cost a lot of taxpayer dollars to obtain. You'd definitely expect more caution from the federal government than private industry, especially given that they're supposed to do things "right".
