I prepared taxes in a past life. I think we need a drastically simplified tax system. There are too many carve-outs, caveats, and complications. A simpler system would be more fair, everyone playing by the same rules.
Most people don’t treat taxes like paying money, they treat it as making money. That should change too. People should be angry when the government wastes money. It might change the political makeup of government too, which is why change is unlikely to happen.
- malshe 2y agoSingapore has enormously simple taxation for salaried people. The government just emails you an invoice, which in my case contained only 3-4 entries each year. You verify the invoice and click a button to accept/dispute it. I think a few European countries also have a similar system.
