Under Steve Jobs the company ate the fees not the users. You were not allowed to charge more in the app than via your site. This is the difference I'm getting at: "We want a cut but our users shouldn't have to pay more" vs "We want a cut and our users can pay for it" Which is why it's specifically the approach of Tim Cook's Apple to it's customers.
