This is a proof that both politicians and economists are clueless perhaps on purpose. How about getting rid of this tipping thing as a whole? It has essentially became a way to scam customers.
- standardUser 2y ago> How about getting rid of this tipping thing as a whole? Do you propose we make it illegal to tip?
- shiroiushi 2y agoHow about adding extra taxes on tips? Instead of taxing tips like regular income, tax them at 90%. Then no one will want to work for tips, and they'll be phased out quickly.
- 7jjjjjjj 2y agoThat would actually be amazing. I fucking hate tipping. Especially how it seems like there are 50,000 different random jobs that take tips and half the time you have to choose the tip before receiving the service, defeating the stated purpose!
- alxmng 2y agoOne option is to outlaw asking for a tip at a place of business. No screen prompting for a tip, no slot on a receipt to accept a tip, etc. Nothing could be displayed conditional on purchase (such as a receipt, a PoS terminal, etc.)
- adrianmonk 2y agoThat seems excessive. We could start by raising the minimum wage to a living wage and eliminating the special rules for tipped employees ($2.13/hour wage, etc.). If customers know the workers get paid decently, they probably wouldn't feel obliged to leave a tip. And business owners might switch to a no-tip policy since a better customer experience could attract more customers.

- foxyv 2y agoI've never understood the reasoning behind this carve out. Tips are supposed to be in addition to the worker's wage to show appreciation for good service. Not a replacement for their wages. This has made tipping from a nice thing to do to a necessity if you receive service. You are essentially paying the restaurant's payroll. It's insanity!
- eltoxo 2y agoOr we could just keep the same system we have now and politicians could focus on real issues instead of meaningless bullshit like this.
- joshstrange 2y ago> Do you propose we make it illegal to tip? Before services are rendered? Yes, I think I'd be ok with that. Really I'd like to see a groundswell of people refusing to tip but that's the catch-22, stopping tips hurts the person without fixing the underlying issue (being underpaid/dependent on tips). How do you take away the crutch without knocking the person down? I don't have a good answer but tipping currently is out of control and something needs to change.
- bluefirebrand 2y agoObviously this would be an absurd thing to try and police. You may as well try to make it illegal for people to give money to each other. You would see insane interpretations of this sort of ban, like "I can't pay my teen an allowance because that counts as a tip, but I also cannot employ them and pay them as an employee because they are underage, so I guess they don't get an allowance I would like to see it made illegal to pay someone lower with the expectation that tips will bring up their income to make up the difference And at the same time I would like to make it illegal for companies to automatically add an expected gratuity to your bill, and illegal for them to insert a tip solicitation into payment processes No more "how much would you like to tip" screens on checkout
- aeternum 2y agoI'd like to see it illegal to prompt for a tip. Businesses can have a tip jar or a sign with a venmo QR code on it. But make it illegal for POS systems to have a default tip and prompt for a tip.
