The contrast between Europe & US is interesting in cases like this.
You have both different views of personal freedoms as well as of basic human rights.
As an example to contrast - NYC has been considering passing a law mandating all rental housing includes air conditioning. Further to that, we have cooling centers for people who cannot afford air conditioning in their homes.
For those that might argue about different climates - the high temperature in NYC & Portofino are the same today.. and in fact, the "feels like" temperature is higher in Portofino, as is the overnight low.
- thefz 2y ago> Portofino has been part of a regional national park since 1935, and up until a few years ago, the installation of AC units on its pastel-coloured buildings was entirely banned. The difference is in the fact that we do not care about profit - natural parks exist to preserve the nature. Period. No dogs, no AC, no people, we do not care. Nature is the priority. No discussion allowed. Portofino lies in one of such parks. Adapt or leave, if you are uncomfortably hot.
- fmobus 2y agoThe rule doesn't seem to be about enforcing nature conservation (what we typically associate with natural parks), but rather to avoid breaking the outward appearance of the buildings. Surely if you are able to install an AC with a more discreet condenser unit, it should be ok.
