Why Opening Grocery Stores Alone Doesn't Solve Food Deserts Deserts
- seanhunter 2y agoTitle contains a repeated word. It should presumably be "Why Opening Grocery Stores Alone Doesn't Solve Food Deserts"
- klyrs 2y agoIndeed, but I rather think that opening nothing but grocery stores would create an area devoid of grocery store deserts, at the very least.
- twoodfin 2y agoThere’s insufficient market demand for grocery stores in some economically struggling areas therefore… The government subsidizes the financing for construction of grocery stores in those areas, but there’s still insufficient local demand for what such stores can offer at independent scale, therefore… The large chains that have achieved the benefits of scale—and passed them on to customers who choose to shop there as a result—should be forced by the government to forgo those benefits and withdraw them from consumers, therefore… Everyone gets the same experience of shopping for groceries in an economically struggling but government-subsidized area. And as a bonus, Propublica’s progressive friends got to give Walmart a kick in the pants. This is trying to solve flooding by putting buckets into the tide: Fix the struggling economies (or, frankly, enable people to more easily relocate to less struggling ones) and the Whole Foods will follow.
