For Sale: Caltrain EMD F40PH-2 Locomotive (Used)
- ggm 2y agoSurely is technically diesel-electric since I think they virtually all are. Might qualify for some EV bonus offset...
- defrost 2y agoYep, diesal-electric. DETAILS: The used Caltrain EMD F40PH-2 Locomotives will be available for sale around October 2024. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F40PH https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EMD_F40PH https://caltrain.fandom.com/wiki/Caltrain_900-919 https://caltrain.fandom.com/wiki/Caltrain_900-919 > Might qualify for some EV bonus offset... <chuckle> Sadly, unlikely, aside from the obvious burning of diesal to generate electricity ain't saving the planet there's this: Locomotive engine must be disabled per a state grant funding agreement. So there goes your Mad Max dream of having a shanty town using a train burning guzzulene to power the christmas lights. They're suggesting to use it for a Big Train themed AirBnB or "something else".
- tsukikage 2y agoWhy do we have that condition - why do we want the engines destroyed? What is the benefit here? What bad thing would happen if the locomotives were sold with working engines?
- ggm 2y agoIt's not entirely analogous but tanks can't be sold to the public with the gun in fully working order, in most economies. It has to be functionally incapable of being fired. I think at a minimum they cut off the breech. Older diesel locos are probably a toxic hazard at best remediated but not entirely safe. Old cars dumped in the bush cause ecological hazard leaking oil, spreading asbestos and other things. But to your point: I think it may be a valuation thing. If the engine works it has appreciable value, and if it was a rental from GE they may actually demand it be disabled because their model of RPM == revenue would be destroyed if the old engines simply entered service as 2nd hand goods. If its off-book, the best way to confirm a write-off is to demand it's non functional. I don't think they do this with steam engines mind you.
