OpenBSD Minimalist Desktop (2022)
- turtleyacht 2y agoOpenBSD 7.1 on a Lenovo Thinkpad X280 (8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD, Intel wifi)
- t-3 2y agoWhy assign screen brightness up/down to a hotkey, does it not have function keys for that or you just prefer them on the bottom side of the keyboard?
- turtleyacht 2y agoIt does look like screen brightness involves pressing Win+b or Win+Shift+b. Using the Fn keys should be possible. The command `xev -event keyboard' running in an xterm to see which key(s) to remap, and then Fn+F5 and Fn+F6 for -/+ brightness. Possibly--I haven't tried it. Actually, a 17.3" 4K System76 with 96 GB RAM and 12 TB goes for almost $7k, but a general search for "system 76 openbsd" led me to the article. It looks like X280 is my dream portable machine for the near future. Maybe extras for parts too. I've cannibalized a bunch of 11e laptops for a home lab and wanted something faster: https://versus.com/en/intel-celeron-n4120-vs-intel-core-i5-8350u https://versus.com/en/intel-celeron-n4120-vs-intel-core-i5-8... I searched for the submission's link on HN and didn't get any hits, but the article actually links to the same submission from a couple years ago: OpenBSD Minimalist Desktop - https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33237968 https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=33237968 - Oct 2022 (108 comments)
- t-3 2y agoOpenBSD has always automatically managed the brightness keys in my experience - meaning they work in console as well as in X without any configuration needed. I don't know exactly where this is handled but I suspect it's at the kernel level as there's no acpid or similar daemons managing the events.
- CTOSian 2y agofolks as a tip: install x11/skippy , task-switcher like exposé on macs makes the things way better..
