(Hello,
git rebase ‘d
into this account are [the personality behind] vinnyvichy and once&future spectral_vinnys, who have been vitiated)
Seems like Braverman in the wikipage, as well as Arnold Kling, are in the Guardian* cluster? I think that could be a rather better dichotomy for our present context than left/right. NYT in your earlier example, is fully in the Guardian camp., e.g… Dan Williams is (considerably?) harder to classify.

[with the Trader, by reciprocity, having a Jungian shadow of Saint]
Updated update: Wojak as reigning local guardian spirit.

- gradschoolfail 2y agoSomething to ruminate on! At first blush, what is HN. At second, the principle of individuation as the shadow of the Apollonian|X [we’re taking GT seriiusly here, yes?]

- 082349872349872 2y agoIt's a (romantic if not logical) shame that my usual sources have full scans for 1872, but not for the edition(s) containing Versuch einer Selbstkritik.

- gradschoolfail 2y agoLikewise, Sir.. Apologies for the slight (or severe?) misdirection. Heres my attempt to remediate.. & a more refined suggestion to dig out FWN’s earlier, unlabelled, docking attempt.. With that blunt but rather understated (and in some degree disingenuous) entry in one of his notebooks from 1872 – far more deadpan in tone than many others of the same period (there is, for instance, a nearby note which equates philologists with castrati ...) – Friedrich Nietzsche encapsulates the inescapable provocation of The Birth of Tragedy: a work written by a classical scholar in defiance of the most fundamental norms and protocols of his profession. - 082349872349872 2y agoA real world event has meant I haven't delved as deeply into Rao yet as I would've liked, but one thing I've noticed so far: are we sure this "global Weirding" is truly global, or is it just a "cloud mouse" thing? Maybe it's just because I'm in Rao's definition of a 1st world country (small rich European), but from 2004 to 2024, the biggest changes in my day to day have been: (a) national cashless payment app, and (b) peanut butter and pierogis in gas stations. Neither of those seem particularly weird to me.
- gradschoolfail 2y agoTrying to formulate a sensible reply to your fencing regailings as well.. A quick and dirty one to your current attempt at (hyper-?)normalization : How is your part of teutonia dealing with the destitute? I say the Fuggerei, e.g., is rather weird, in a global sense… Might have to look at the cities.. (There are also nonpro videos on youtube documenting how homeless are kept out of sight in Tokyo, the protestant partner to Osaka?)
- 082349872349872 2y agoThere was an HN thread on how even if one has statistically significant correlations, impossibility of determining causality means interventions on what one believes to be an independent variable may have no, or even the opposite, effect on what one believes to be the dependent variable. Some related link (gwern?) gave as an example the poor track record of many attempted anti-poverty interventions. With that in mind, our approach is very KISS: rather than attempt to manipulate other things, that may or may not work, or set up entire parallel "programs", we just have the destitute buy their food and shelter on the open market, and reimburse them for the expense.
- gradschoolfail 2y agoOk.. I concede the point. Problem with the future, some people dont like to call worrying about the future a system of survival. They forget there are shamans paid to handle the traffic (who are not destitute, or have health issues) ;) where would JJ put linux and python? Guardian? How about Rao? Hypernormal? (I would put linux in Weird-Pros, as I desperately need a concrete example of a survivor in that sector that you can relate to :) cpython goes into hypernormal, of course.. with your blessing it could even go into box Wojack.
