I look forward to a future where space resources (asteroid mining, solar collector arrays) are used almost exclusively for the highest-return purposes - generating more space resources! Every time something goes up or down the gravity well we call Earth, we all lose. That cost is a huge barrier to efficient profitable activities. And since the highest cost location for any resource to be deployed is currently in space, it makes sense to just leave the stuff up there, use it there and generally build an economy there. I can hear the naysayers - "What's in it for those of us still on the ground!" and the answer is, we play money games here, essentially wagering in that giant parimutuel betting parlor called the 'stock market'. For instance, create a fund now for investing in space industry. As funded business profit (by selling their output to each other, leaving it in space where it does the most good) the fund raises in value, attracting further investment.
