I find "luxury beliefs" a useful sibboleth, in that the people who use those two words (in the belief that they denote) tend to cluster.

- PaulHoule 2y agoI saw what might have been the essay that defined this term and I think it was pretty articulate and had a point, based in the long tradition of conservatives pointing out that many defenders of the poor are not themselves poor and that many things that people think will help the poor don't. (The New York Times is a good illustration in that it seems left-leaning in that it is in support of social democracy (so long as it doesn't cost too much) but is right-leaning that it doesn't challenge existing power structures (e.g. control of the means of production) and most of all would hate it if Charlie Blow or David Brooks got canceled because their privilege to get paid $20,000 to give a commencement address is inviolable) In the case of this article though it has degenerated to just another meme, a label that people use to "other" other people and prove their own membership in a certain tribe. People who are in the know will hit the "like" button, it will just blow right by most people unless something happens to make it a temporary or longstanding flash point.

- gradschoolfail 2y ago(Hello, git rebase ‘d into this account are [the personality behind] vinnyvichy and once&future spectral_vinnys, who have been vitiated) Seems like Braverman in the wikipage, as well as Arnold Kling, are in the Guardian* cluster? I think that could be a rather better dichotomy for our present context than left/right. NYT in your earlier example, is fully in the Guardian camp., e.g… Dan Williams is (considerably?) harder to classify.
