"it's those greedy landlords fault"
- VyseofArcadia 2y agoA problem can have more than one cause.
- toomuchtodo 2y agoBoth the city and private housing providers colluding to price fix housing costs can be wrong. The whataboutism is tiring.
- declan_roberts 2y agoTalk to somebody trying to replace a SFH with a duplex in San Francisco and then get back to me.
- FredPret 2y agoThis is the best way to bust the landlord monopoly (if there is one). Build more houses than we need. Suddenly those landlords have to compete for good tenants. And monopolistic cooperation will suddenly become impossible: when vacancies go up, and finance costs stay the same... the pressure will be on, and all it takes is a single landlord to cave and lower his rent to break the whole thing apart. Before I moved to Canada, I lived in a country with surplus housing. Renting there was not only incredibly cheap, but very easy to arrange. You could play prospective landlords off each other to get better rent or have them do minor renovations. Legislation makes little to no difference in the face of market power.
- declan_roberts 2y agoDefinitely. Nobody likes a greedy landlord. Let's flood the market with housing and destroy them.
- FredPret 2y agoThe best way to deal with greedy members of any particular profession is ironically to flood the market with more people in that profession
- ChrisLTD 2y agoMy thoughts exactly. Price fixing should be illegal, but that's not the primary mover of insanely high rental prices in San Francisco.
