Hmm, Im not really sure why MBTiles are popular? They seems to be cache unfriendly. Good old tiles via /{x}/{y}/{z}.png seems to be better. And you can slap web cache in front. Hosting those is super simple. The problem I have is how to generate them efficently w/o big resources.
