maybe dumb question, but what accounts for SD card density improvements? what's the primary factory that allows fitting more and more memory? is it transistor shrinkage, like CPUs?
- ThrowawayR2 2y agoMore bits per cell at the cost of lowering retention lifetime and lowering write cycles before failure, cf. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multi-level_cell
- userbinator 2y agoShrinkage and more bits per cell.
- duskwuff 2y agoPlus physical tricks like die stacking. Modern SD cards can contain up to 16 stacked flash dies.
- AtlasBarfed 2y agoThe major reason for increasing flash storage: they are stacking layers, I think they are around a hundred layers of flash at the extreme end. They can't shrink flash too much, because it becomes more delicate and has less retention and write endurance the smaller you get.
