Layoffs are piling up, but the stock market went up on better than expected unemployment claims today.
I wonder how many employees for these mega corps even qualify for unemployment after a layoff? I figure most get severance, and long term employees possibly have healthy investments earning dividends.
- cruffle_duffle 2y agoWhy wouldn’t they qualify? There is no income cap or anything like that.
- jarsin 2y agoMy only experience with unemployment was in the great recession. I was not paid any severance, but had 2 weeks vacation time saved up that they paid me on final check. The UE office made me wait 2 weeks because of the "severance". Back then, like today, the interest rates were still earning me a decent amount. They also made me report interest as income and subtracted it out of my total. So if you earned more than UE benefits in dividends and interest I would think you would not qualify. Maybe varies from state to state though.
- cruffle_duffle 2y agoHmmm… didn’t consider the interest angle. That would have to be a hell of a lot of interest to nullify UE though. It does indeed vary state to state considerably.
