Why? By his own account, by his family’s account, and coming from every remotely reliable source that could have any knowledge to the contrary, he was born as, raised as, lives as, and most importantly is a human.
Anyway, this is the reason he gives for the no: "The most probable DSD for Imane Khelif is 5-alpha reductase deficiency, or 5-ARD. People with 5-ARD have XY chromosomes and testes that produce testosterone. But because of a gene mutation affecting the 5-alpha reductase enzyme, their testosterone can’t be converted to dihydrotestosterone, which is essential for developing male genitals. People with 5-ARD, though biologically male, are born with female-appearing or ambiguous external genitals, leading to potential misidentification as female at birth. Many with 5-ARD are raised as girls, only discovering their condition at puberty when their internal testes trigger male puberty. This results in masculine features and a physical advantage over women in sports."
One may defend that women going through male puberty should compete with women going though female puberty but it's not so obvious.
- defrost 2y ago> The most probable DSD Ass-uming that's even the case. Colin is clutching straws he doesn't even have so hard here it is laughable. By contrast: This statement, however, ignores that the history of women’s sport, from tennis to weightlifting to shot put, and yes to boxing, is peppered with athletes who did not conform to stereotypical, European standards of womanhood, including, ironically, European athletes. Whereas we previously accepted that some women were indeed bigger, stronger or faster, than others, now it appears that many of us expect female athletes to be cookie-cutter images of each other and seek to punish those who do not conform. For all the growing awareness of non-binary gender, it seems we are growing less tolerant of any deviation from the stereotypical norm. As many others have already pointed out, Khelif has been boxing in women’s competitions for many years, including at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics without these accusations arising. She has produced pictures of herself as a young girl, spoken of the challenges of boxing as a female in her Algerian culture, and has been defended by the IOC and Algerian officials. https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/8/7/imane-khelif-and-western-delusions-of-white-innocence https://www.aljazeera.com/opinions/2024/8/7/imane-khelif-and...
- kgwgk 2y agoHaving testicles is not really about "conforming to stereotypical, European standards of womanhood" - is more of a biologial feature distinguishing males from females except in the presence of rare development abnormalities. Of course one may also say that there is no point in trying to distinguish males from females and we should just supress the sex categories - or keep them open to anyone and let people choose where to compete.
