The US infrastructure has been set up to make owning a car a very rewarding proposition, so, of course, lots of people own cars, and that will continue to be the case as long as things stay in the neighborhood of where they are. But there's no reason that future infrastructure decisions have to be made in a way that continues to privilege cars over other forms of transportation, and car ownership will follow, with a lag, the way that infrastructure decisions point.
