I wanted to agree with you, but then I realized: Snow Crash is basically the Tarantino approach applied to cyberpunk. The violence and bad-assitude is way, way over the top, but has a cutting, satirical intelligence to it. Eventually your inner fanboy and your outer ironist are laughing simultaneously. So it's totally possible to make this a great movie (if you agree that Tarantino makes great movies, at least).
