Cool article.
But..when the proletariat comes for you with the guillotine, do you think locking yourself in your multi-million dollar bunker is going to save you? You're going to bowl while the mob is outside your door? That's the real problem for some of these people.
- vundercind 2y agoThat’s why so many are buying New Zealand citizenship and building refuges there. Stable liberal democracy that’s unlikely to just seize all their stuff, low risk from climate change, natural beauty, almost impossible to reach by waves of climate & climate-war refugees.

- vundercind 2y agoI have confidence they will remain capable of “sucking up the money” in the rest of the world even as they shelter in NZ and chaos reigns elsewhere. Might keep them busy enough. Foreign spoils as pay-offs go a long way to keeping locals friendly.
- Yizahi 2y agoProletariat will indeed stand outside of the bunker door. But they will be facing outside, and the guillotine will be prepared for the Eastasia enemies with which Oceania was fighting "forever". Plenty of examples - Ruzzia, Venezuela, Best Korea, Iran and so on.
- voisin 2y agoI cannot parse your reasoning or argument here. Can you elaborate?
- AnimalMuppet 2y agoIf I understand correctly, the claim is that the elite will be able to persuade the proletariat to defend the elite against the "foreign enemy". I will grant that it often works that way. But there are examples of when it doesn't...
- M95D 2y agoIt's a reference to Orwell's 1984.
- theshrike79 2y agoA huge dilemma for these mega rich safe house bunkers is "how do we prevent our security from just killing us when shit hits the fan?". Some mitigation solutions include allowing the staff and security to bring their families along for motivation, but even that's not a sure-fire solution. Barring going full Bond Villain and installing some kind of hardware limiters on the staff there really isn't a way to solve this :)
- Eddy_Viscosity2 2y agoVladimir Putin started off as 'security staff'.
- theshrike79 2y agoThe rumour is he kept his ears open and got enough information to advance using what he knows...
