I did door to door selling in the US (as a Brit) as a summer job after graduating. The items weren't super expensive (maybe max $80 in the early '90s). I wasn't very good at it, but some people did quite well out of it. Admittedly, only earning student-amounts. I don't think you could have fed a family on it.
