FWIW, I'm not familiar with either one.
I don't think it's reasonable to single out those factors. https://www.thedailybeast.com/kamala-harris-picks-minnesota-governor-tim-walz-for-vp-running-mate?ref=home?ref=home https://www.thedailybeast.com/kamala-harris-picks-minnesota-... says:
> The chief executive of a Democratic-leaning state that Republicans have nonetheless said they are making a play for, the Minnesotan brings rural roots and Midwestern appeal to crucial swing states Harris needs to win.
Plus support from labor and from high-level Democrats:
> In the frenzy leading up to his selection, he was championed by labor unions.
> Walz also seemed to be former Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s top choice for VP; a source familiar with her thinking told The Hill that she “is always especially fond of former House colleagues.”
It looks like Walz was a teacher for 20 years and non-commissioned officer, while Shapiro, like Harris, spent his career in government. A Harris/Shapiro ticket would be "coastal elites".
