I have a summer home on 38 acres of hardwood forest and prairie in southwest Wisconsin. We keep it basically as a nature preserve for birds and butterflies. Last year was a drought but we had plenty of monarchs. This year's been extremely wet, and there are extremely few monarchs, consistent with the observation of the article. We've had plenty of swallowtails, fritillaries, and red admirals, though.
