Is it a classic or a modern sabbatical?
In a modern academic sabbatical, researchers generally visit a different university and work on a problem adjacent to their regular research interest (there's a whole paper about this phenomenon: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1360080X.2022.2140888 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1360080X.2022.2... )
Sounds more like a classic, 'period of rest', sabbatical. Seeing where someone from OpenAI goes on a modern sabbatical would be interesting.

- bravetraveler 2y agoI like this because it points out the nerd aggrandizing while elbowing hustling. I could never find some person - OpenAI employee #2, Torvalds, or otherwise - going on a Job Tour captivating. They're all perfectly great and relevant people. I don't mean to dismiss them, just the posturing. More productively, I just don't see the benefit. Modern intellectual property behavior makes this particularly adversarial. People like to be celebrities and build a brand, so it'd be LinkedIn but louder.
