I'm taking a sabbatical through end of year
- talldayo 2y ago> The mission is far from complete; we still have a safe AGI to build. He might as well take the rest of the decade off.
- cebert 2y agoBeing able to take a sabbatical would be so nice. I lost my dad in 2021 and my mom has ovarian cancer. I feel like I just need a break for reflection.
- cut3 2y agoIm sorry about your struggles, that sounds really difficult. I hope you are able to find time for yourself <3
- a_bonobo 2y agoIs it a classic or a modern sabbatical? In a modern academic sabbatical, researchers generally visit a different university and work on a problem adjacent to their regular research interest (there's a whole paper about this phenomenon: https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1360080X.2022.2140888 https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/1360080X.2022.2... ) Sounds more like a classic, 'period of rest', sabbatical. Seeing where someone from OpenAI goes on a modern sabbatical would be interesting.
- edflsafoiewq 2y agoAnd on the seventh day, God tinkered with Jupiter and stuff, to keep His metrics up.
- bravetraveler 2y agoI like this because it points out the nerd aggrandizing while elbowing hustling. I could never find some person - OpenAI employee #2, Torvalds, or otherwise - going on a Job Tour captivating. They're all perfectly great and relevant people. I don't mean to dismiss them, just the posturing. More productively, I just don't see the benefit. Modern intellectual property behavior makes this particularly adversarial. People like to be celebrities and build a brand, so it'd be LinkedIn but louder.
- brcmthrowaway 2y agoHe works 20 hrs a day, well deserved! Use some of those multimillions
- happymellon 2y agoNo he doesn't. No one "works" 20 hours a day.
- barryrandall 2y agoNot for long, anyway.
- happymellon 2y agoNot even for 20 hours. I've worked in plenty of places that had an outage and required people to work together to get things operational. After 12 hours decisions are slow, usually deferred and the contributions nose dive and they get sent home. Even CxO's who poke their heads in to interfere fuck off for most of the middle of the day, and are gone by 6. This guy is pretending to annoy 3 different shifts.
- MVissers 2y ago3 top people leaving in one day. This is fine.
- kamikaz1k 2y agoWho else?
