1. It's only a modicum of assurance. 2. There are many ways to get a modicum of assurance. Types, tests, formal methods, cleanroom software engineering, NASA's IV&V, many others that I'm sure I'm forgetting. So there are many ways to "know if your shit works" and none of them support turning off one's brain entirely (for the part beyond the "modicum"). What I did here is to explore some of the other approaches that I have long neglected.
