Show HN: Indicate new stories on HN frontpage (Bookmarklet/UserScript)
- Brajeshwar 2y agoThis is nice. But don't the default HTML does it on its own across all browsers. All browsers have a default value for the `a`, the `a:visited { different color }`. It changes the color to a subdued gray in the case of HN, while the un-visited and new remain dark (your NEW).
- jader201 2y agoIt’s not clear what the reference date is. If it’s the last time you viewed a page, then this would remain mostly unchanged (meaning no rank changes, no “new”), for example, when you refresh the page quickly after an initial view. Then if you come back, say 10 minutes later, it shows movement/new stories since the last visit 10 minutes ago. That’s how it sounds like it works, but I could be wrong. But I’m not sure how else it would work. But I don’t think it’s simply showing unread stories, because it’s also tracking rank changes, and that has to be relative to a reference date. EDIT: looking at the code, it seems it works exactly as I described above.
- smusamashah 2y agoThat's exactly what it does. Added 'since your last visit' in description of gist.
- smusamashah 2y agoThat works only if you intend to open/visit all links. Seeing doesn't count. Not all stories are worth checking out. This script allows me to decide based on titles of new stories if I want to visit it or not. If used as a userscript, a page refresh to highlights new stories automatically, as a bookmarklet I decide when if I want to check if there have been any new stories I haven't seen.
- RaftPeople 2y agoI wrote something very similar. For mine I have a check box for whether I am interested or not (with perm storage). My presentation shows all new items first then previous items I'm interested in (checked), then all others. Each time I open it up I just click the ones I want to retain, all others drop to the bottom.
- Leftium 2y agohttps://hckrnews.com https://hckrnews.com lists all the HN stories that have hit the front page, in reverse chronological order. I find this easier than constantly refreshing the HN frontpage. (I'm not sure what the polling interval is; some stories might slip through the cracks?) I also made a mashup of: - https://hckrnews.com https://hckrnews.com reverse chronological story order - https://hackerwebapp.com https://hackerwebapp.com UI - Several enhancements I personally wanted. --- I find Refined Hacker News[1] useful for highlighting new comments since the last visit.
