I'm not sure why we should accept that starting Calculator.app is slower than the equivalent operation on a TI-83.
- mike_hearn 2y agoIt's not, it's drastically faster. The TI-83 is a device I have to pick up, probably fetching it from a drawer first. Calculator app starts in a few hundred milliseconds from the moment I finish typing "Cal" in Mission Control, which itself is only a few seconds after I decide I need a calculator. Generic tools can pay a performance price for that generality and still win. A dedicated device just cannot beat that speed no matter how many ASICs it uses.
