Jam-Proof Fiber Optic Drone Testing in Ukraine
- eimrine 2y ago> communication cable unspools as the drone flies; with no tension, there is no risk of tangling of breaking Anyone believes in this statement on optic? Optic wire is not a single-use copper wire armed with a durable carbon line so the wire can phone to a flying rocket. The render image is obviously fake since no optic line can tolerate that insane corner angles in the tiny cylinder.
- rainworld 2y agoAnd yet this stuff has existed for decades: https://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/2023/05/fibre-optic-guided-missiles-efog-m-polyphem-and-others/ https://www.thinkdefence.co.uk/2023/05/fibre-optic-guided-mi... Real problem is price: 10 km of fiber is going to costs quite a bit more than the rest of the drone and the whole point of FPVs as the are used right now in the war is their relative cheapness.
- eimrine 2y agoI surprised that such kind of optic material exists at all. But the bobbin on rocket from the link seems almost as big as sordier's head and does not obstruct flying. The bobbin on a little drone is literally PITA, and that kind of placing which is dependant from some spinning of the drum seems like a recipe for disaster. But who knows maybe a bobbin with fibre is going to be suitable for a large drone such as Baba-Yaga: https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/12/03/baba-yaga-is-a-giant-ukrainian-drone-that-drops-bombs-at-night/ https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2023/12/03/baba-yaga-i...
