If a technology is an existential threat to your business I think it makes sense to try and control and understand that technology. Someone is going to build this stuff and ruin social media anyway, might as well be Meta so they can put it to good use or better understand how to prevent those problems. It's sort of (but not entirely) similar to what happened with Kodak and digital cameras.
