Would love to hear the White House explain to me what Open-Source AI is, in their own words.
- talldayo 2y agoSeems pretty clear to me they're using it colloquialism for freely distributed weights.

- jimsimmons 2y agoIs that "umm ackshually .." bit really worth doing here? Open weights vs training code is not a distinction worth drawing for the average person
- bravetraveler 2y agoI'm just barely more informed than the average person... and I still don't think it is worth drawing. Perhaps I'm wrong, willing to discuss. I'm simple so my thoughts on this are also. Weights, training code, or... CAD files that just so happen to make child-size cages. Until I'm actually caging children - buzz off.
- burkaman 2y agoThis sounds sarcastic, but as is often the case the White House has quite competent people working on this who have put a lot of thought into it already: https://www.ntia.gov/federal-register-notice/2024/dual-use-foundation-artificial-intelligence-models-widely-available-model-weights https://www.ntia.gov/federal-register-notice/2024/dual-use-f... Unfortunately it's past the deadline for you to add your own comments on this, but I'm sure there will be future RFCs if you have thoughts.
- jahewson 2y agoIn the spirit of this pedantry I’d like to point out that the NTIA is not the White House.
- burkaman 2y agoThat's true, but "White House" in this headline was actually referring to "Alan Davidson, an assistant secretary of the U.S. Commerce Department". I'm actually not sure where the article got the term "open source" from either, it says it's from a report but I don't know what report or who wrote it. It seems like they are using "White House" as a term for people in the executive branch working at the direction of the White House, which is common. When I say "the White House has quite competent people working on this" it's because the NTIA RFC I linked was based on a direct executive order from President Biden.
- ta1243 2y agoThe NTIA "serves as the president's principal adviser" in its field.
- popalchemist 2y agoSummary: On October 30, 2023, President Biden issued an Executive Order on “Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence,” which directed the Secretary of Commerce, acting through the Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Communications and Information, and in consultation with the Secretary of State, to conduct a public consultation process and issue a report on the potential risks, benefits, other implications, and appropriate policy and regulatory approaches to dual-use foundation models for which the model weights are widely available. Pursuant to that Executive Order, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) hereby issues this Request for Comment on these issues. Responses received will be used to submit a report to the President on the potential benefits, risks, and implications of dual-use foundation models for which the model weights are widely available, as well as policy and regulatory recommendations pertaining to those models.
- bravetraveler 2y agoPiling bodies, sorry - creating committees never impedes an effort. Nuh uh, never! That was sarcastic. Here's a bit of help for them, development happens with our help or not. For every regulated repository that's removed, there's a mirror/fork. I don't really have a point... just having a little fun at the expense of the latest thing in the harbor. I'll honestly stay apprised
