Data Workers, in Their Own Voices
- ggm 2y agoThe distressing reality of the jobs people are required to do, drives strongly to the most marginalised available labour being used: it's horrible, upsetting work, and nobody wants to pay highly for it, so it's farmed out to people who have few choices for more meaningful work they can do safely (in most senses except mental) The effect on these people, many of whom would have PTSD can only be imagined. Asking Syrian refugees to identify photo sites, which probably wind up being used to improve targetting to the sites. Asking victims of sexual violence fleeing war torn and disrupted communities to monitor toxic messaging systems for confronting content, the list of shit online jobs couldn't get much worse.
