Hope + action = effect
I'm not confident our politicians in the US will be bold enough, so change is more likely to come by interpersonal influence. We can live incredibly rich lives on much less, and predominantly on low-tech renewable resources if we tend the land well.[0]
One way to deflate a bubble is to withdraw. We're in an energy bubble thanks to oil. This can go on awhile but we'll continue to destabilize the average weather on earth, and to make more extreme weather. Life can adapt, but much will die if the gradient is too steep.
Consider what you really need.
Consider eating mostly plants (I'm not vegetarian, I treat meat as a rare luxury and not a daily staple).
Consider walking instead of driving.
Consider not upgrading whatever technology you enjoy or are hooked on (for me that's been gaming computers), and pivoting to something with far less embodied energy.
Consider scaling back your transportation demands (I have given up flying, and scaled back long-distance travel in general, but will still take the train and drive with my spouse and child, on rare trips).
Consider getting to know your neighbors, regardless of political affiliation, as you will be dependent on each other when disasters occur. Why not start now to build that social support network?

- mytailorisrich 2y agoIf we consider the global population and the number of people globally who are still very poor it is simply impossible to all live "rich lives" in a sutainable way for the planet (living in a small flat and being prevented from travelling and eating what we want is not exactly my idea of paradise). The way out of this while really getting the best life possible available to everyone is to acknowledge at the highest levels that the global population must significantly drop with all the challenges that this implies to adapt.
- jfengel 2y agoGlobally, politicians are insufficiently "bold". But the US is a whole step beyond that. The US actively inhibits progress on energy infrastructure. The leading candidate for chief executive is likely to abolish the environmental agencies altogether, and pull the US out of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
