The enshittification of everything is on the rise, and this is just another part of the trend of “let’s see if we can get away with it” (or “whaddaya gonna do bout it?”)
From Google login popups, “open in the app” modals, and AI stealing everyone’s data, tech companies are firmly turning evil. It’s no longer about move fast and break things towards progress (even superficially), it’s about complete domination using any means necessary.
On the email side, spam is on the rise, and especially messages that claim to be “about your account” and therefore exempt from CAN-SPAM jurisdiction. “Oops, we forgot to make a functional unsubscribe page” tactic falls in the same vein.
Hanlon’s razor is being weaponized, and ulterior motives must alway be seriously considered. We see it constantly in dark patterns, and how often Microsoft and other companies “accidentally” reset your preferences in ways that benefit whatever new feature they’re pushing.

- Bluestein 2y ago> it’s about complete domination using any means necessary. We have fought and died fighting against despotism, only to have it return dressed in technology, like this ...
- theanonymousone 2y ago> whaddaya gonna do bout it? This is, IMHO, probably the only factor that matters: We let them dump into domination, and now we cannot "do anything about it", it seems.
