Haha this is the second time my degree has come in handy after getting me a job in a record store after college. I’d say “music theory” as a general concept is closer to understanding computer science principles like managing complexity or the memory hierarchy. Individual disciplines, such as orchestrating for a specific kind of ensemble (string quartet, big band…) or writing in specific forms (fugue, AABA popular song…) are closer to mastering practical programming tasks like working fluently in a given programming language.
