Self hate? more like government hate. Which in France is a reasonable survival strategy for its people judging by their history: a bunch of kings, 3 emperors, fairly corrupt governments with huge deficits etc. I don't get why self-sabotage is likely in this case though: plenty of real external enemies, including one that recently "stole" France's African empire.
