We need an open source library that handles nat traversal and persion:ip mapping. Maybe we can steal some networking code from a bittorrent client? I still find it silly that the default way to build an app for person-to-person communication is to have that communication go through a central server.
Once you have that stuff done building voice chat on top is trivial.
- jalcine 14y agoWhy do all of that? I might be repeating myself, but why not use XMPP's video chatting services for this?
- rabidsnail 14y agoBecause XMPP requires going through a central server (at least for session initialization), and because it punts on nat traversal. Also, the nat traversal code in transmission and the official bittorrent client have had a _lot_ more real-world testing.
- kennywinker 14y agoI'm pretty sure skype is peer to peer. It's just online status and discovery that go through their servers.
- rabidsnail 14y agoThat was kind of my point. All of the skype alternatives I've seen are much less distributed.
