Stack Overflow will unite community knowledge with AI to stay relevant
- OhMeadhbh 2y agoMy problem with SO is it very often gives a solution, but not the solution to the problem I have. Infrequently, solutions given are suboptimal -- they are technically correct, but completely misunderstand the underlying technology. Sort of like if someone asks "how do I avoid an implicit type conversion warning with gcc" and the response is "just add -w to the command line." That will get rid of the warning, and is the answer to the question that was asked, but a more correct answer would be to add a explicit cast to the right hand side of the assignment or verify the underlying type on the right side can actually be coerced into the underlying type on the left side. I already have the problem that when I ask Google a question, it answers a question it knows how to answer. In the old days it would find pages with the keywords I provided and then gives the top ranked hits. This worked very well when I was looking for pages where a specific error message was discussed. I worry that "smoothing over" detailed keywords on something like Stack Overflow (not to mention a smattering of "suboptimal" answers) will not be the win they think it is. Hopefully, they will retain. the option to search for discussions with specific error or warning or log messages.
