You need to understand what ChatGPT is saying.
I wanted a backward compatible change to code. ChatGPT proposed something, I was sure this was not backward compatible. Argued for 10 minutes but ChatGPT insisted it was (it was around lower/uppercase).
- gonzo41 2y agoMaybe I'm in the minority in how I use the the AI tools. But I really don't let it write big chunks of code for me. It's great for tricky one or two liners or for esoteric shell commands. But i won't let it go hog wild on my code base.
- KingOfCoders 2y agoMostly all of my side effect free functions are done with ChatGPT (e.g. sort the list of items by X then y then return z, or find A in this deep structure of map[map[map[...]]). If it doesn't need to use lots of APis it's usually right. For my website in Hugo, it writes all the code for partials and shortcuts.
- nottorp 2y ago"10x more productive" means they were selling AI tools :) The only scenario in which i can imagine the LLMs increasing my productivity 10x is if I had to write code to create a new window with lots of controls on it from scratch. And that only for the initial set up of the controls. But then I'd have to, you know, write the functionality for those controls...
- KingOfCoders 2y agoIt often helps when you need to do something that you haven't done before. Letting ChatGPT show you the code - e.g. in another programming language b/c it's a script - and you learning from the correct code, makes development faster. Outside learning, something you have done a hundred times already, ChatGPT doesn't help a lot. So I guess the amount of ChatGPT helping depends on the ratio unknown-work/known-work.
- nottorp 2y ago> and you learning from the correct code Yeah, except is it the correct code? I had answers with the correct code but also answers with code that looked correct but had no connection to what I wanted.
